One of the relatively few Autobots to be shown transforming before coming to Earth and getting a new alternate shape to help fit in, Wheeljack was evidently some sort of boxy Cybertronian U-Haul sort of thing, making his new incarnation as a Lancia racer a decided upgrade.
A consummate engineer and inventor, Wheeljack invented a 20ber of strange technical devices theoretically intended to fight the Decepticons. Some worked better than others, and some didn't work at all. His finest "inventions" were likely the Dinobots, who he managed to reprogram from mindless, lumbering leviathans to... well, marginally less mindless, still-lumbering leviathans. Making them in the form of animals with the lowest brain/overall mass ratios was probably a design error too big to compensate with a simple patch.
From a collecting standpoint, Wheeljack is rare. Though he was reissued in 1991, his mold was subsequently damaged beyond repair, making further releases impossible.
