The Autobot designated surgeon, Ratchet appropriately transformed into an ambulance. Though far from the most combat-capable of the Autobots, Ratchet's skills keeping his comrades in top fighting condition were highly appreciated. Though the surgeon occasionally felt that he let the team down when he couldn't keep up with others during the fight scenes, most of his comrades realized that his off-battlefield skills were more important than just having another great shot in the fighting montages.
Ratchet saw most of his action in the first season of the Transformers cartoon, eventually sort of being shuffled off screen so they could sell newer toys. He made his grand comeback in the animated movie, dying horribly in the first ten minutes.
Getting a Ratchet toy for your collection generally isn't hard. As with Ironhide, toy-Ratchet shares very little resemblance to his cartoon counterpart, being based off of a very different type of toy than most early Transformers.
