Is it more than meets the eye? Possibly because it is some sort of robot, but in disguise? Why, you must be talking about Transformers, long-running cartoon series with multiple franchises and toy lines, conveniently purchasable in any fine retailer of children's toys!
Transformers originally started back in the mid-80's, with the first television show beginning in 1984. Though the Transformers line has included a 20ber of comic book series, the most popular media form by far has been cartoons, which have successfully introduced several generations of children to the toys that they absolutely must own. In part due to its longevity, in part just because robots are cool, Transformers contains many of the most sought after collectible for anyone interested in vintage toys.
The Transformers series is one of the longest-running toy lines, stemming in turn from several different "franchises". Generally speaking, collectors looking for nostalgia value are looking for toys from their youth. For most modern collectors, this is Generation 1, the original Transformers line. However, there have been a variety of other franchises, from popular entries such as Beast Wars in the mid-90's and the Animated series still running, to relatively obscure Go-Bots line, intended for younger children. If you're interested in buying for someone else, it's important to be certain what they specifically consider "Transformers".
