Walt Disney had no idea what he was about to unleash when, on December 15, 1954, he aired the first of a three-part TV series. With Fess Parker as Crockett and Buddy Ebsen as his sidekick, the show was an instant hit with girls as well as boys. A two-part series was signed for the next year and youngsters of the baby boom clamored for so many raccoon hats that the price of raccoon fur rocketed from $.25 to $8 a pound.
Today, those children from the 1950s are now grown ups, and Davy Crockett still conjurs up happy times. The Davy Crockett shows were on during a time when most families had only one television set. This meant that the entire family would be seated in the living room, watching as Davy (the "King of the Wild Frontier") would bring order to the... Wild Frontier!
Perhaps it is those very same children of the 1950s who are now collecting Davy Crocket lunchboxes!
