The Disney miniseries, Davy Crockett, first aired on December 15, 1954, and is now available on DVD. Fess Parker played Davy Crockett. Many people still remember the theme song: "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" today. Filmed in color in the Great Smoky Mountains and in California, the series has five, one-hour episodes about this iconic character from American history.
In the first episode, called Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter, Davy Crockett fights Indians under General Andrew Jackson, and Crockett not only attempts a truce with the Native Americans, but slays an angry bear with his knife. The popularity the series received was a big surprise to Disney. It seemed as if the American television viewing public simply could not get enough of Davy Crockett!
